Climate scientists working at the Australian National University have received a large number of emails containing abusive and threatening language. The emails, which have unnerved some of the scientists prompted the university to relocate some of them to safer places. The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Ian Young has said that staff should not be receiving such treatment. He also said that, “The concept that you would be threatened for your scientific views and work is something that is completely foreign to them.”
Climate science has been thrusted into the public eye ever increasingly over the years due to the issue of climate change. Though Professor Young has said, “Obviously, climate research is an emotive issue at the present time, but these are issues where we should have a logical public debate,” The Australian Federal Police have not been officially notified of these threats but are aware of them.
