Just last week, Godafoss cargo ship ran aground in Oslo, Norway creating an oil spill in the fjord. 500 tons of oil fuel spilled into the icy waters and only now, the full extent of the damages are beginning to surface.
Despite the Norwegian authorities efforts the spill can not be contained. The ice is complicating matters and the current is pushing the oil 100 km up the coast. Several hundred seabirds have been seen covered in oil and the oil is threatening the Ytre Hvaler Marine Park.
CEO of WWF Norway, Rasmus Hansson has said that “The difficulties of removing oil in icy waters show that navigation carrying heavy fuel oil in vulnerable areas needs to be stopped. The oil industry has to stop giving the impression that oil protection equipment can protect vulnerable resources in harsh weather,” .
